Crazy Lazy

This weekend was crazy and kind of lazy. I feel exhausted like I had been busy all weekend, but I really don’t recall doing all that much other than sewing.
I made Oliver’s Labrador costume for his school play, Arf!, that is happening next Tuesday (I can’t wait!). I used a synthetic fabric of some sort that I picked up on the $1.50/yard rack at the local market. It’s kind of silky like jogging shorts. I used a cheap children’s pajama pattern for the base of the project.

My biggest gripe about the whole thing is how flat the ears lay against his head. I considered adding some cardboard into them to give them a little pep, but I knew it would render it un-washable and I see this getting a lot of wear from Mr. Oliver.

The only alterations to the pattern were adding a tail and adding the hood with ears.

The other required piece of the costume was a bird to hang around his neck. I chose a Mallard. I sewed this up using scraps of broadcloth from my stash and a basic design I imagined up. The whole costume isn’t my best work, but Oliver’s happy, so I’m happy.
My other big sewing project this weekend finishing up a gift I was making for Mrs. Leucht, Oliver’s teacher. This was really meant to be a ‘thank you for being such an awesome teacher!’ end-of-the-year type gift, but she has been so kind to us during the past few rough weeks we’ve been having, I decided to finish it early and give it to her.
I’m not particularly thrilled with how it turned out, but I was sick as a dog this weekend, so I will just have to live with it.

Each strip of fabric contains 5 little pockets, 25 pockets total. Perfect for stashing a little something for each student (Oliver’s class currently has 23 students, so I figured 25 was a good number).

My embroidery puckered, which royally annoyed me, but again, I was too blah to even rip out and start over.

Oliver and I gave it to her this morning. She seemed to really like it.
The final sewing related project I worked on this weekend was cutting more strips for my handmade jelly roll. I picked up a couple jelly rolls at a steep discount somewhere not really knowing what to do with them. I picked up Jelly Roll Quilts by Pam and Nicky Lintott at my local library. What a great book. I’m amazed by how many different quilts you can make from a single jelly roll!
One of the tips in the books is to create your own diverse jelly rolls by cutting a strip out of every fabric you bring home or have in your stash. I set to work doing this and have a pretty nice jelly roll going so far….

They look uneven, but I assure you it’s my inability to lay anything out neatly.

Happy Monday, everyone!
